SPECIAL NEEDS

Pizza's special need is really just a special family. You see, he was raised to be a rabbit tracking dog and lived most all of his life in a small cage outside, and we were SO happy to rescue him from that life! His first foster (temporary) was delighted to watch his super slow and careful inspection of the inside of her house, and his current Foster loves his gentle personality and sweet goofiness. Pizza has shown great promise in many areas of adjustment - totally enjoying air conditioning, napping on rugs maybe even experimenting with dog beds, and sometimes even engaging in some play with another dog. But when Pizza is outside where smells call to him, he will revert to his ground tracking, nose to the ground, moving slowly and methodically and giving an occasional tuneful aroo. Fortunately, he is very motivated by food and treats and, although he will probably always respond to ground smells, he can be redirected with patience and a little skill. We have not found anyone yet willing to invest that for this sweet boy and he has been on several sleepovers which were unsuccessful. If you are someone who loves the hunting breed and would be willing to show this beautiful beagle what home life and being loved is all about, please let us know. If you want a beagle who is already adapted to our pet culture, Pizza is not your guy. He's making good progress with his house training but still needs to be taken out frequently and rewarded when he goes. His foster mom still has him wear a belly band at times. He is crazy about food and will do just about anything to get to it, so anything remotely edible should be handled with that in mind. Currently in his foster home the kitchen is off limits to him. He's very good natured and wags his tail a lot. He still moves about cautiously and slowly examining everything with curiosity. Pizza sleeps and eats in his crate. He is quiet at night and in fact does not bark very much at all. He loves affection and is so very deserving of a good life - we hope to soon find a special family to meet his special need.

NEW ARRIVAL

Everybody loves Pizza!!!
We rescued this beautiful beagle boy from a not so great situation. He has been bred to track rabbits which is helpful because he is not a runner, just a sniffer. But Pizza's small slice of life was hard and very limited. We are so grateful to introduce him to being clean, eating good food and being shown lots of affection. He is grateful too! We will be looking forward to sharing more about Pizza as he settles into a foster home and we learn about his social skills, personality and temperament. He did test negative for heartworms!!!
